Trevor Crabtree

It is with great sadness that I post this message.

Trevor Crabtree passed away tonight ( Sunday November 11 2007 ) at about 8.15pm in hospital after a short illness.

His knowledge and inspiration in the collection and cataloging of fossil discoveries in New Zealand, and his endless stories of bush adventures will be sadly missed by us all.

Our thoughts and condolences are with the family at this time.

Please feel free to post a comment .

Not only a loss of knowledge and leadership, but a loss of a mate. I was going to get you back up there this summer and shoot some portraits, record some of your stories.. too late.
Perhaps some pictures to hang in the cabin then…

Hallo…I am a 53 year old Hotel manager in Wellington. Joan Wiffen is a dear old friend. I spoke with her at her home today and she told me that Trevor died last night. My wife Suzie and I would like to pass on our very sincere condolences to his family. Is there an address that I can send a card? My hobby is the study of moas and dinosaurs. Joan hooked me on Dinos in 1978 when I first met her and Pont. I have been keen on them ever since. Now our 12 year old son Harrison has caught the bug too. My address is 57 Pasadena cres, UPPER HUTT tel 04 – 5266301
I love your site and would be keen to hear from you.
PS did you see the full page article on Joan in yesterdays Sunday Star Times. Quite a coincidence that this should come out on the same day that dear Trevor passed away.
PSS I would dearly love any local news clippings on Trevors passing as I have a detailed Dino archive.
Trevor made a very great contribution to our knowledge of NZ DINOS and we will all miss him.
with very best wishes BRIAN REEVE

I am very sorry for his passing but even more so I never got the chance to thank him in person for his contrubution and dedication he made in discovering the ancient past of Aotearoa.

There were and are still a number of areas to look at even though many had been looked over time and time again. As the rains fell and the streams rose they released more of the hiidden treasures for those with the knowledge to find.
TC was one of the few who had that knowledge, I was and am but a mere learner, more interested in just being there with TC among the bush and the wilds where you could believe that you were the first to be there.
Its great that we have a site which can now be dedicted to TC’s extrodinary hobby, which became a serious part of his life.
I’m proud and privilidged to have had him as an Uncle and a friend. Let the search carry on. TC is now with those Dinosaurs he looked for.

The loss of a “good keen bloke” & a mate.Life is but a lesson & we have lost one of our best teachers. I will miss our conversations & your wealth of knowledge on dinosaurs plus our shared love of sci-fi. Your passion for fossil hunting was contageous & many of us have now caught your bug, rest assured we will carry on your work.”Go where no man has been before” was a phrase most suited to you ,as a pioneer of dinosaur fossil hunting.
” May the force be with you”.Dave

Indeed a tradgic loss. A man of many tallents not totally recoginised nor acknowledged. A wealth of knowledge now lost forever except what Trevor freely shared with others.
Let his work go on in memerory.
